Midlands Chiefs Back Government’s Rural Industrialisation Drive

Midlands traditional leaders have applauded the Second Republic for creating platforms that empower them to lead development initiatives in line with the rural industrialisation agenda.

Meeting in Gweru for the Provincial Chiefs Council session, the chiefs underscored the need to drive economic growth from the grassroots as outlined in the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2). They also pledged to promote unity and development within their communities.

Midlands Provincial Chiefs Council chairperson, Chief Ngungumbane, said their biannual meetings help shape policies that can be adopted by government.

“We continue to support our government as we push towards Vision 2030. These meetings allow us to craft recommendations that contribute to development across the province,” he said.

Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Owen Ncube, described the engagement as key to strengthening traditional governance and ensuring culturally grounded development.

He highlighted the crucial role of chiefs in representing community needs under the Traditional Leadership Act and related legislation.

The traditional leaders also commended government efforts towards food security through increased input supply and the expansion of irrigation schemes, particularly given the effects of climate change.
