Mash West Nears Completion of AI-Driven Mhangura GMB Depot

Mashonaland West is close to meeting its grain storage targets as construction of the upgraded Mhangura Grain Marketing Board (GMB) depot moves toward completion early next year.

The smart storage facility, fitted with Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems for sorting, drying and moisture control, is expected to drastically reduce post-harvest losses. For years, farmers in the area were forced to transport grain nearly 50 kilometres to Lion’s Den, resulting in high costs and rejected deliveries due to moisture challenges.

Local farmers say the new depot will ease pressure and improve production.

“We were struggling with transport costs and long distances. This project motivates us to produce more,” said farmer Clemence Mvurayachena.

Another farmer, Lemumba Mtapapanda, said the facility will help them meet the 12.5 percent moisture requirement previously difficult to achieve.

According to Provincial Mechanisation Engineer Ignatius Ruroza, construction is progressing on schedule and the 56 000-tonne facility is set to be ready for the upcoming summer harvest. He said the integration of AI technology will ensure efficient grain handling and quality preservation.

Mashonaland West Minister of State Marian Chombo said the province will now push for greater investment in agro-processing, taking advantage of the improved storage infrastructure.

The project is expected to boost productivity and strengthen efforts toward national food security targets.
